(Kyodo) _ About 50 inmates of a prison on Indonesia's Nias Island, which was devastated by a massive earthquake last week, have been ordered to stay at home because the prison was destroyed in the quake, a National Police spokesman said Monday.

Zainuri Lubis told reporters 178 inmates escaped from the prison in the island's main town Gunungsitoli after the 8.7-magnitude quake destroyed the prison building on March 28. About 50 of them, however, surrendered to police.

"Since the prison was destroyed, they are not put in jail for the time being, but stay at home and must regularly report to police," Lubis said.

According to police data, 616 people have been confirmed killed in the earthquake as of Monday.

The data also said 3,212 others were injured, 413 of them seriously, and three are missing. The quake damaged more than 7,000 buildings, mostly houses.

The earthquake also affected some parts of Aceh Province, hit hard by the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami, which are believed to have killed about 220,000 people in the region.
