Hi everybody, I am new to PTO, when I discovered this web site I read some of the information and it was very helpful and informative, thank you.
I have my first question my husband just got approved to go to fire camp, we are currently on schedule for our family visit on 05-13-05:p.
Does anybody know how long it takes for the transfer process and if gets notified ahead of time so that I can cancel the family visit or is the family visit automatically cancelled once they tranfer him out:confused: ???

Don't you worry your little head about canceling that visit, they will do it for you if he is not there. They will notify him prior to going to camp so that he can get his stuff together. Some times a week or two in advance. Phone calls are quite frequent at camp so he can call when he gets there, so to speak, if you are concerned about knowing when he arrives. They WILL NOT give you information at the prison about his transfer to camp. Did they give him a choice as to where he wanted to go? Fire seaon is comming up so they will probably be moving them out a little faster now. Good luck, Fire Camp can be a great experiencee

Thank You Mrs. L!
To answer your question, about what camp?? I know that he will be going to Jamestown for fire camp training and then placed. We are hoping for a camp close to home, near Santa Barbara, does anybody know were I could find a listing of all the camps or more information on them?

If he hasn't even made it to Jamestown yet (which is just the training facility) then you can count on him being there quite awhile. If they pass all the requirements at Jamestown then they go to a camp.

How long is a while? from what he was told it would be at the most 3 mos. of training and then he would be transferred.
I hope its not too long! Jamestown is about 7 hours away from home!

My answer to your previous post was an assumption that he had finshed training. If he has not even gotten to Jamestown then those answers do not necessarily apply. There are a lot of people waiting to start training but fire season is going to start soon so that might make it go a little faster. Not sure though. If you do a search on PTO you will find a list of all fire camps and their addresses and phone numbers. Normally they get to choose the camp depending on space and normally it is close to home. Or at least closer than Sierra Conservation Center. Again, good luck.

It all depends on the level the inmate is classified when he arrives at Jamestown. I have heard of some inmates waiting up to a year just to get to the training portion. They have to go through a health screening to see if they are physically able for the job also. The training isn't actually that long but sometimes it can take time in between each class for a new class to start.

Hello and welcome to PTO!!! In regards to fire camp, he wont get sent to camp right away first he will get sent to a place where they will train him. My man was sent to Jamestown and I think he didnt start his training there until I want to say about 6-8 months but prior to going to Jamestown he was in reception for maybe about a month after they told him he was elgible for camp then he was moved. I am not quite sure how the visiting will work after he is transferred but the transferring from prison to the training camp to the actually camp can be lengthy so I am not quite sure the exact time.

My husband went to Jamestown (facility for Southerners) Susanville is for Northerners. We was there about 8 mos. He is a 1/2 timer. They usually go through faster. After finishing FFT it took about 4 weeks to go to camp. He was notified the night before his transfer. He put the placing of what camp in God's hands. Never are there any guarantees of where they transfer. He ended up out in Hemet. Riverside County.
