My son is in prison in North Carolina and has been accepted for the study release program. He is in minimum custody and will go to a community college adjacent to the prison. He is going to take the HVAC program. We will have to pay the tuition, books, and fees, but we are so glad he gets this opportunity. There are very few prisons in the state that offer study release. I called around to the ones listed as having it, and one told me they were discontinuing it because it was too hard to police. I only know of five spots. I think there needs to be more opportunities for inmates to take college courses, especially ones that could help them to be self-employed. My son will take his entrance tests tomorrow. He is so excited, even to be taking a test!

Update: My son has almost completed his first semester. He has two A's and one B, possibly changing that B to an A by the end. He is so motivated and loves every minute. His math teacher told him yesterday he did not have to come to class any more because she drops their lowest grade and he has made A's on all his tests with only one more to go. He told her if she did not mind, he would come any way. Getting to walk out of the prison camp Monday through Friday and come back on his own means the world to him. He says the worst time is weekends. I wish more prisons would offer study release. Getting trained to eventually own his own business (HVAC)will help him so much.
