BRIAN Khoo, the man who pleaded guilty to attempting to rob a Maybank branch with a toy gun in November, fainted when he was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and nine strokes of the cane..
His defence counsel said he had left his job as a court clerk for a better job prospect. When that did not work out and the debts piled up, Khoo — who has a wife and four sons — became desperate. He lost the use of his right eye after he was shot by a Cisco guard. — Channel NewsAsia

Is that typical of their sentences there? Do they use the cane alot. I remember the boy from the .U.S. who was caned.

I remember that too, I think that's what they do as punishment still (obviously, duh). I have to say if I were given the choice between jail time or a caning I would take the cane anyday. I know this guy didn't have a choice of which one but I would take it as punishment.

When I lived in England and went to school they would cane the back of your hands if you were bad.

Yes, the cane is used quite a lot.
It is a serious thing, not like the thin bamboo canes that they used to use in schools in Britain.
It is about 2 inches in diameter and is adminstered to the buttocks whilst the offender is stretched across an "A" frame. A doctor has to be present as it can do so much damage. Even one stroke will leave a scar for life.
Some people can only tolerate one stroke every three months, so have to keep returning for the next stroke over and over until the sentence is complete.
Some criminals are said to fear this punishment more than imprisonment.
It is only used on men over the age of 18 (I think). It is not used on the young, females, elderly or disabled. It is used on foreign citizens and visitors.

Oh my God that is awful, yeah I'd rather be in prison. That's so cruel, it's torture. Thank you for informing me further. I knew that it was worse than the cane in British schools, it has to be I suppose. Gosh this is just awful and I will be thinking about this for days and days....it's really a disturbing visual for me.

Just a point, the punishment has to be administered all at once not over a period of time, if the prisoner is medically unable to take the punishment then that is it. no more.
