SINGAPORE: The wife of a man who had jumped bail for cannabis possession, has been sentenced to three weeks' jail and fined $5,000.

Belgian Nadia Celina Seraphina Cornelius pleaded guilty in court on Monday on a charge of giving false information to the Central Narcotics Bureau regarding her husband's whereabouts.

She is the wife of Sri Lankan Jeremy Mahen Chanmugam who fled Singapore last December after being charged with drug possession.

Before Monday's sentencing, Nadia has already spent the last 10 days behind bars.

This is because the authorities suspected she was likely to join her husband and daughter who are believed to be in Sri Lanka.

The three-week sentence was backdated to the date she entered prison.

Her lawyer, Subhas Anandan, said that Nadia would be repatriated after completing her prison term. - CNA
