Cathia 03-25-2005, 05:00 AM I would like so much to know how I can send some money for a friend of mine be able to pay stamps .
Can you help me ? As far as I know , he wonīt be access to his bank account. Is it the truth ?
Thank you so much for any information.
Doc's Sis 03-25-2005, 05:05 AM Are you an approved visitor of the inmate? If so, you can send him a money order and he can then buy the prestamped envelopes at the prison.
No, he may not have access to his bank account. The only money he can spend must be put into his prison account.
OR, when you write to him, you may send a couple of envelopes to him which have the embossed stamps on them. I don't know if you can buy such envelopes in Brazil or not..

You cannot send stamps or prepaid envelopes into an Australian prison. He has to purchase them from his commisary account. You can send him money into his account, you will have to send it to the prison in the form of a money order. You need to put his number on it, but prisoners dont have to have their numbers put on mail in Australia. Perhaps a phone call to the prison he is at may, help, if you cant call, PM me, and I can call for you :)
Unfortunetly, all you can send him from the outside is mail, everything else has to be purchased from commisary.
seenitall 03-26-2005, 03:33 PM Kyla is right in relation to the money order, but most prisons allow the prisoner in this circumstances to apply for permission to receive a larger amount of monies than is normally permissable each month so he can keep in contact with you. The normal amount differs for some prisons but the normal amount can be upto $170 per month , $120 for available spend and $50 overmonth account.
One more thing , if he has a bank account , in Australia he can access it via an organisation called VACCRO a prison support organisation. The prisoner writes to them and supplies a withdraw slip. This organisation can send monies from his account to his available account .
Hope this helps!!
Medea 03-28-2005, 10:17 PM It's changed since I was last in prison. You used to be able to lodge in women's prisons as much as you want but since November 2003 they will only allow $100 a month. Next time a priest comes to the prison your friend can also ask for a prepaid envelope. Just tell him to ask the priest that he has relatives in Brazil (or anywhere) he needs to write to and they usually give issue out envelopes, stamps, writing paper, pens etc no problems.

Kyla,
Really thanks for your interest in help me .
In fact I am still very confused about all that "nightmare" . It was an unexpected fact (to me ...) and I have to admit that itīs has beem my first time involved with "prison stuff" .
He is going to be sentencing next friday - April 8th , so I have no idea how long nor where he is going to . Just to become it all still worse , I am miles and miles away from him :(
After next friday, the only way Iīll have to get some news will be from his daughter but I am absolutely scared to lose track with him. It is why I thought to send him some money or envelopes just to make things bit easier to both of us.
Anyway , great to know I can count with you . As soon as I have more details , for sure will be back.
Thank you so much and hope you might understand my "poor" english.

Sorry , but only way to get some prepaid envelopes is from a priest ? You meant a priest is able to give it for him "for free" ?
Hi Cathia
If your friend is on remand in prison, and the 8th he gets sentenced to go back to prison, more than likely he will go back to the prison that he is doing remand time, it just depends on what prison he is in. He will be allowed calls, depending on how much money is on his phone account. They have public telephones, but cant use currency in them. They get a pin code to call, and need to get permission from the prison to add you to his phone account. He can call as much as he likes, as long as he has money on his account. The calls are from 6 minutes (in secure custody), to 12 minutes (in residential custody) at a time. After the time is up, if the phone is free, he can call back.
The can purchase prepaid international stamps (They are $2 each), to write you.
Feel free to ask as many questions as you like, we are here to answer and listen. :) The first time someone you care about goes to prison can be very stressful, I totally understand that.

No, you can buy prepaid envelopes as well. There are priests that do prison visits and they do give out pens, writing paper, envelopes etc if you ask them.
Cathia 04-04-2005, 08:11 AM Hi Kyla ,
Once more thanks for all.
It doesnīt matter now but anyway let me explain bit more about my friend situation.
He has never spent time in the prison before. He has caught doing illegal stuff on net . Then he went to the court twice and on 8th will be the last one , which means he is going to the prison . At this time he is very "confused" as well . All of us have no idea what is comming next ... Question is , most probably he is going to the court alone , since his daughter lives in another city , which means that I wonīt have way to know what happened until he might call or write her.
Unfortunately only after knowning where he is in , will have ways to do anything. Sending some money to his account or simply write him.
Thanks God I found out that wonderful site, where I can open my heart. It is supposed that all of us are in the same boat ...
Thanks for all.
