MichaelsGrl 10-02-2002, 11:53 AM Can anyone here tell me anything about Parchman. For those of you who aren't familiar with Mississippi...it is the men's state prison. I am mainly concerned about things like:
What is visitation like? Are they contact visits or do you have to visit through glass partitions? How long is a visit?
What is the phone system like? $ average cost per call$
You see, Michael will be moved back to Mississsippi probably sometime around Jan. or Feb. Although I can't go and see him yet, some of my family would really like to go and visit him. Any information you all could give me would be GREATLY appreciated.......Michelle
that is one bad prsion. :( phone system there sucks, half the time you get cut off in the middle of the call, the calls are high as well, i cant remember how much, but they are suppose to get 15 mins, it is like 15 bucks, more i think, for each call. i am not sure about the visits, i beleve they are through the glass. my best friends loved one was on death row there. i am not sure about the rest. i hope this helps some

My husband is in Parchman, so I spend alot of Saturdays there. Are there any other members that visit there who would like to talk to some who knows what it is like? From what I have heard Parchman is different from any other facility, anywhere. I would like to try to have my husband moved. Any good or bad stories about other facilities? I have had people tell me that Marshall County isn't so bad.
Just looking for someone to talk to.
aprilcat 11-24-2003, 12:40 PM a_d_m ~ i have a friend in parchman, on death row, but have never visited him. i've read several books on the facility, and i am reading one now, "down on parchman farm". i DO wonder what it's like....ac
Jandara 12-09-2003, 05:53 PM I would love to know more about what it's like at Parchman... I have a very good friend there.... In Unit 32. I've never got to visit him yet...but hope to get to someday.... what exactley makes Parchman different from other facilities?
It seems like a terrible place from what I hear.
email me if you'd like to talk sometime
aprilcat 12-15-2003, 04:57 PM jandara ~ to read up on why parchman is such a bad place (particularly unit 32), go the the aclu's website, and search for "parchman"...you'll get to read their report that details the "whys" for you. ac
neischellef 01-17-2004, 01:54 PM my husband was at parchman for 3months before i got him moved to kemper county regional correctional facility and i travel back and forth for 3 months to see him and beleive me that was a very long drive and the thing about parchman was getting up there and waiting in line for their snacks and you would be in line for 1hour before getting on the bus which had to be full before you leave and sitting there on the bus and having to wait while they go to diffient camps and drop people off that cuts your visit even shorter but where he"s at now its a whole lot better
TRINITEE729 02-14-2004, 12:27 AM  I just want to know any and everything anyone can tell me about Parchman from visiting hours to sending packages.
Rainbow 02-14-2004, 12:52 AM Hi Trinitee, Check out the Mississippi Forum, you might want to post something there. and Parchman may also have a web site or check the Doc web site for Mississippi.

Connie 02-16-2004, 05:08 PM The conditions at Parchman really depends on what Unit he's in. My husband is in Unit 30 and it's not so bad. The Trustee camps like 10, 12, 15, etc. aren't that bad either. Unit 29 and 32 are the worst.
I visit there EVERY Saturday. As far as visitation goes it's not too bad except that the lines are horrible.... stand in line to have your id checked, stand in line to get a pat-down, stand in line to get on the bus, wait for the bus to fill up, check in again at the camp, wait for them to call him out.... and 2 hours later you finally see him.
Lysbeth 02-17-2004, 07:13 PM Hi,
Since you had some specific visitation and other questions for Parchman, I have moved this thread to the Mississippi forum on PTO so your post will have the opportunity to get more specific responses and the best answers to your questions, and won’t get lost in the busy Visitation forum... I’ve found they often get more and better answers there, AND the information will be here to help others in the future, too. :)
You also might want to thumb thru the Mississippi forum to see if some of your questions have already been answered in the past... the direct link to the forum is here:

Hope you find the info you're looking for and good luck! :)

Hi Trinitee. I visit Parchman a lot. My husband is there. I can't say I know all the "tricks" to the place but I have learned alot in the past year. The visiting hours are from about 9 am until 2 pm. The day will be either Saturday or Sunday depending on the unit. Oops, I guess I am assuming too much. Some do visit during the week on Wednesday, I think. Also on the packages, I don't think they are allow. My husband has to buy everything from there. PM me, maybe we can get all of you questions answered.

I can visit on any Saturday. I was there yesterday too.
Hugs to you Babbles. Parchman is pretty bad in some areas and in some ways. From what I have heard though, 24 isn't as bad as most. Don't let them discourage you. They love to try.
softheart 02-29-2004, 04:16 PM Unit 32 is awful and a awful place to visit.

First of all, let me welcome you to PTO and the Mississippi forum. Secondly, my heart goes out to you. I cannot imagine what you are going through, but I am here to help in anyway i can. I hope to see you around more often.
ABprincess913 04-11-2004, 11:56 AM In my opinion, Parchman is like the prison from H*L*!! They do anything and everything they can to discourage their visitors from visiting. I have even, for example, right now, seen them make their guards work harder just to make it more frustrating for the visitors. I guess it works for some, but not me. I figure that, regardless of the chaos and confusion there, I would be COMPLETELY INSANE if I did not go. Don't let Parchman discourage you, girl. Show them that they're not going to get you down.
TRINITEE729 08-20-2004, 07:39 AM do you visit at parchman? if so i have a few questions.
Hi Trinitee. You know that I visit at Parchman and I think we have at least one more member that does. Go ahead and post your question. Hopefully we can get you an answer.
TRINITEE729 08-22-2004, 10:20 AM i wanted to know about the visitation and if all visits are contact? he is in unint 29 and i wanted to know if the visits are contact
I think that most people at Parchman do get contact visits unless they are in a strict max unit, like 32. The only way to know for sure is to ask him or call the head of visitation. I am pretty sure he would have told you if the visits were non-contact.
TRINITEE729 08-22-2004, 06:08 PM thanks again amy

BELINDA 08-28-2004, 09:24 PM Ok Thank You Very Much. I Am Hoping The Warden Can Help Me With My Visitation Problems........belinda
I could be mistaken but I think that something like that should be directed to the commissioner. I will double check for you.
Going by what I have found on the DOC site, I would say that you should contact the Cheif of Security. from what I read, they could be denying you with out justification. If you would like the text of what I found PM me and I will get it to you.
BELINDA 08-28-2004, 11:17 PM Ok Thank You For All You Have Done To Help Me Amy... It Is Truly Appreciated
BELINDA 08-29-2004, 04:49 AM Thank You Amy For All You Have Done To Help Me. If Any One Knows How To Contact Chief Of Security Or Even His Name Please Let Me Know...............................belinda
Jonathan 09-06-2004, 07:59 AM I was at unit 29, and yes he does receive a contact visit. If he is A custody he can receive 4 visits per month, B custody he can receive 2 per month (every other week). I would suggest that before driving long distances, call ahead to make sure that the building he is in is not on Lock Down. If another inmate causes a disturbance and everyone is locked down for it, NOONE in that building can receive a visit.
luciadmc2 11-05-2004, 03:39 PM Can anyone tell me what the mail rules are for Unit32-c at Parchman? How many Internet pages can I send? How many pictures? Stuff like that. It would be greatly appreciated.
There is a link in the Mississippi prison profiles forum for Parchman (Mississippi State Penitentiary) that will out the mail rules. As far as I know, the mail rules are the same for every unit there. I think the maximum number of internet pages is 2, but I am not sure.
Mrs.Glamma 11-05-2004, 10:58 PM Hi, unfortunately some of the rules are not posted and we learn the hard way when the mail is returned. The limit is TWO internet pages. I DO know from the experience of getting mail back with notes attached. No material that is obviously copied or is copyrighted will go through (subject of course to personnel moods), just not worth the hassle. For example, I copied the church bulletin; it came back with a notice saying copied material. The hymn sheet from Mass which I sent came back with a note about copyright; and I sent a bunch of stuff for him to read about his son's recently diagnosed diorder...you got it..too many pages.
Good luck and hang in there.

Helen 11-30-2004, 10:24 AM I've got a query about visiting Parchman on Public holidays. I have a friend on death row and I know that usually visiting is only on Tuesday's (is it the first and third?). I've been to see him once, which was a wonderful experience, but it is a long way to travel for one visit so I was wondering if there were extra visits on Public holidays. Then I would consider going over next Easter or Thanksgiving so that I could get two or more visits in a week.
I've visited the death row prison in Virginia and they do have extra visits, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Anyone able to help?
Helen.
I hate to be a downer on this but I seriously doubt it. I have been visiting Parchman for almost 2 years now and we have never had a extra visit day because of the holidays. As a matter of fact, I think I saw a memo posted saying that there would be no visitation at all on holidays.
I think there are exceptions for out of state visitors but I am not clear on those. For the best information, I would contact Lt. Stevenson. She is the head of visitation at Parchman and she has always been a great help to me.
Helen 12-01-2004, 11:35 AM Thanks a lot, Amy. Lt. Stevenson was really helpful when I went over lasttime so I'll check with her. I must admit I wasn't hopeful when I posted the query, but you never know. Miracles do happen!
Helen.

tdeanslady 01-28-2005, 06:50 PM Hey there i just seen your post, and i have a boyfriend and a friend that are at parchman, this is my 2nd go around with visitation there, hopefully my last! well i have been visitn for over a two year period off & on,just went last sunday for first time in a while and visits are much better. But my friend is in camp 26, and he writes and it seems to be alright most of the guys that are in that camp were in camp 10 that closed down and they were trustess, so as much as i know it is a pretty good camp. They have down sized that prison alot compared to the past and have shiped out alot of inmates so it seems to be ok, but its still prison. But i hope this helps ease your mind a little we all feel what you are going through. But im sure your son is doing as well as can be expected, just keep up hope.....if i can be of any help im here.....
