Getting Married in a New York Prison?

As far as marriage goes in NEW YORK STATE...

1) Inmate must write to Superintendent of the facility requesting permission for marriage. You can also write to them.
2) Inmate gets a written statement of the exact process for that facility, they vary slightly from facility to facility.
3) Inmate gets permission.
4) Wife must call and schedule an interview on a weekday with Correction Officer to go over inmate sentence and go over marriage license procedure.(this meeting is during the week) Ask as many questions as you want to. He will show you the inmates file and take you into a room to tell you what he was charged for as well.
5) Make arrangements with facility for ceremony and have official approved by facility.(Many ladies will refer a reverand to you, or you will use a town clerk, you can give them a fee if you would like like $50-100 for his services)

(In some facilities like Orleans, the cost for the license is $40 and $50 for the Judge (they wont allow Rev).

6) NY State marriage licenses have to be issued no LESS than 24 hours in advance of ceremony (they actually type the time you received it on the license) This is good for 60 days. Get license ($30-40)
From the NY state website.
http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/married.htm
says 30 in nyc and 40 outside nyc.

*The facility provides this license, and it is given on certain days of the week and month. He must ask when or it may be posted in the visiting area. You have to check, being that some facilities allow this at specific times only!
*Bring ID the day you sign your license! and if you have been married before, divorce papers from that previous marriage.
7) GET MARRIED!!! (during the week some weekends in certain facilities, so you must check first)

Note:
His ring cannot have any stones in it and some facilities require a cap on the price of the ring and a RECEIPT! (for example: $150) You must ask the facility about this cap.

When writing the letter to ask for permision to get married, keep it simple, like state who you are, about how long you know eachother, how it developed and you would like to get married now because you are committed, and thank you...that's it, a few paragraphs and that is all. Then mail it to the Superintendant.

To Change your last name:

First change your Social Security Card...
then your license or NY state I.D...and then whatever you want to, like the bank, credit cards, utility bills, work id....Just bring your marriage certificate and old id and it should be changed ok.

Yes, you can get married in a county jail. All you need is the license and approval form the superintendent.

Can a person who is not a citizen marry an inmate?
(Information provided by TNC, Marriage Moderator)
Here is a link to some information on marrying a US inmate. From what I can tell its not an easy process, but it can be done. In most states the person the inmate wants to marry has to be on the visitation list so if the state normally does back ground checks for visitors then thats probably when any back ground check by the prison would be done.
