Joburg man gets 17 years for killing his wife
March 01 2005 at 05:13PM
A man who killed his wife by starting a fire in their flat was sentenced by the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday to 31 years in prison, of which he will serve 17.
Dean Marlon Daniels, 36, was convicted last week after pleading guilty to the murder of his wife Susan Hazel Daniels in 2002. He was convicted on a charge of murder, three charges of attempted murder, and arson.
Daniel's charred remains were found in the bathroom of their flat in Bella Vista, Johannesburg.
When passing sentence on Tuesday, Judge Kathy Satchwell took into account that the murder had not been premeditated, and that the victim and the accused's marriage had been "troubled."
On October 13, 2002, after an argument over a packet of cigarettes, Daniels said he "threw paint thinners onto the sofa, set the cigarette packet alight and threw the burning packet onto the thinners on the sofa" before leaving the flat.
"I hoped that she would extinguish the fire," Daniels said in his plea.
Daniels's stepson Elcote Stamboul escaped down a drainpipe and two boarders managed to jump out of a window, but Daniels's body was found later between the toilet and the bath. - Sapa
