Greetings all!
I haven't been on this site for a little while now so its good to be back. Question -- what are the qualifications for an inmate to apply (if that's even what the process is) for a Fire Camp like Sierra Correctional in Jamestown, CA?
What are the Pros and Cons of being in a Fire Camp?
If anyone has any info please respond here or drop me a PM. Thanks a bunch.

Hi Rusty
Fire camps are restricted to Level I and II inmates that are in for non-violent crimes, first timers. When they meet their counselor they can ask for a recommendation to go to a fire camp and the counselor can set that up. I don't know the cons of being in a fire camp but one of the pros is 2 for 1 day credits for those eligble for 50% time.

Thanks for the tip!
I am thinking of sending info to my pen pal who may be interested...and sounds eligable. Though I hear from reading other posts that it takes awhile...and in his case he'll have awhile...

hey girly! welcome back! :)
Okay my fiance is in Seirra Conservation right now. RPin is right in what was said but the "Violent Offender" thing is controversal. Patrick was in a DUI acciendent where someone was injured (a by stander) he was given a DUI w/ a GBI Upgrade which inturn makes him a "violent offender" and rec'v 85%. He was sent to Jamestown straight from reception. The main biggies for fire camps is NO violent (rape murder or melostation) no "escapes" or "attempted escapes" and NO arson. they take people that have 7 years or under. Unfortunately people like Pat don't get any 2 for 1 days but camp is the best thing available in the prison system. After all there are no bars or electric fences! :) Pat told his counsilor right away in reception but I think once they get down to a level 2 they can requst to go to camp! It is always worth a try! :)
Hope this helps PM me if you got any other questions! :)

Gotcha.
I don't know anyone out there so it was kind of confusing. I drove by there today while taking a backroad for the hell of it and when I saw the razor wire I was like, "Oh...I forgot they had a place back here..." Well, drove into the parking lot, and turned around because here it was a Saturday, and there were only a few other vehicles around. I'm sure some guards were like, "Wtf?" as I'm driving around all slow trying to figure out where I could turn around. I was like, "Oh god I'm looking suspicious..." which probably would not be the best thing to do in a place considered "no walls"! Oops. :/
Thanks for the info this was the first time I'd heard or seen a fire camp.

I'll throw my 2 cents worth in here. My understanding is that Jamestown is primarily where the firecamp training is done. After prisoners are trained there, they are typically deployed to firecamps around the state. I have only been to the Gavilan firecamp, it is right OUTSIDE the gates of Soledad. I visited there one a month for several years. There are no gates or even a fence that you couldn't step over. Prisoners go out and do projects in the local community in addition to fight fires. I would say that it is night and day better than R. J. Donovan or Avenal (the only benchmarks I have).

I'm confused on the amount of time served at firecamp..is it 50% or 35%? My husband was just sentenced to 3 years at 50%...but can he even serve less thru this program? Also, about their visits...what if they are in for a domestic violence, do they qualify and can they still have visits by their spouse???

Camp or otherwise no "family visits" if there has been DV. I am guessing that "regular visits" are dictated by who the victim was. The 35% ONLY applies at camp if eligible. Those that go to camp and are not eligible for the reduction do their 80% or 85% as was given to them by the sentencing court.
