Panel endorses $20 million plan to handle growing inmate numbers

HELENA (AP) — A legislative committee settled on a plan Friday for dealing with the growing number of in-mates in Montana, endorsing a new policy that would create a program designed for “special-needs” prisoners with mental illnesses, drug addictions and aging problems. The plan, which would cost an estimated $19.8 million over the next two years, adds room for 612 inmates. Corrections officials said they also will require the U.S. Marshals Service to move federal inmates out of the privately run Crossroads Corrections Center in Shelby to make room for 88 state inmates.
