My baby was sentenced on 1/12/05 and then resentenced on 1/27/05 for a crime he didn't commit. The appeals process has already been set in motion. I don't know how long it will take to go through but I do know it can be a lengthy process. Right now he's in DC Jail - city and will be transferred to the Feds later this year :( . Instead of getting a court appointed lawyer he wants to get his own and I've been doing online research trying to find appellate lawyers who have experience with Federal appeals with regards to criminal cases. I've been on google, findlaw and yahoo search. I need advice, referrals, Faith, hope, prayer and other relevant information. I have a list of 6 lawyers and was advised to contact and interview each one. If anyone has any other suggestions please advise.
Thanks guys
Tia

Have you tried contacting the Public Defender's office? They should be able to point you in the direction of an appellate defender - most states have them.

Hello, I know what you are going through and I think I can answer some of you questions, I was in the same position you are in, in July of 2001 when my husband was sentenced. After his sentencing his lawyer did the paper work for an appeal and 5 years later it seems they finally got the ball rolling. I wouldn't say you absolutely need to find a paid appeal lawyer because the DC public appealate lawyers they have work just fine because thats what my husband had to use. Now if you can pay for one I say go ahead becuase the process might be a little faster but if he has a good case for an appeal a public appelate lawyer will work just as good as a paid appealate lawyer.
As a matter of fact I just spoke with my husbands lawyer and she just informed me that his case looks very good for him so I am happy about this.
One thing I must warn you about though is they take they appeal process very serious and as a result they will not share any information with a third party unless they get a letter from the inmate in question with the information of the third party and stating that they can receive information about the inmates case.
Hope this helps.
