Greetings!!

At one of my son's visits we were discussing education and if he had enrolled in any type of schooling or programs. He said according the "laws" he wasn't eligible. When I emailed TDCJ they told me his sentence is too "lengthy" and he had to be closer to his parole date. Hell, that's in year 2031! My son just turned 18 years old last month. We have subscribed to every magazine we can think of and ordered so many books to the point he doesn't have any place to put them. He's now going to church of all religions just to get out of his cell and he is getting mixed messages about religion in general. Texas has already punished him by giving him such a lengthy sentence, but to not educate him is just horrific! I guess he's gonna have to self-educate.

Are there any correspondence courses out there I can enroll him in?

PEACE

Cyndie,
I too have e-mailed TDCJ about my husband not getting any education, to no avail. They just keep sending me off the wall replies that have nothing to do with the issue at hand. I know how frustrating this can be!! This is the 1st time he has actually WANTED to better himself and get out of the system for good with some kind of resources, yet, where he is, which is at a transfer facility, they offer absolutely no education. Only church. I keep getting the run-around!! There is an education place on the TDCJ website that has the info foe education inside. I wish I could give you some kind of help. Mostly all I can say is don';t ever give up!! Keep e-mailing the TDCJ Ombudsman until they help you, and make sure you keep records of your emails for future use.

That is Tx for you. I have look for correspondance courses for inmates in Tx, and I have not been able too. There is plenty out there, but none that will allow an inmate to take the course, I do notknow what the big deal is if they pay for it.

Good luck

I'm taking correspondence classes right now, because I'm on house arrest. I don't see why they wouldn't allow it for inmates. That seems ridiculus!

Clinton is in prison in Va and he has done a few courses already...financial course; tax course and now paralegal course...he once started on a free Bibel college course but after three lessons he felt it was nothing for him, but the others I could even help pay for and they were like 30 to 40 dollars a month. it is correspondance courses. But he always tells me that inside you need to learn learn learn...educate yourself because they have to see that you are trying and you have to keep busy. I wish you and your son good luck!!!

I would be willing to pay for the courses if they would just allow my son to take them. They continue to tell me his sentence is too lengthy. I'm still searching!

I guess if there are correspondence courses available on the "outside," I could pay for them and have them mailed to my son, but I don't know of any. PEACE!

I believe he can take courses from any college/university that offers correspondence courses if you are going to pay for them.

Cyndie ... try calling your local Jr College ... maybe they would have some answers ... I don't recall, did he graduate, if not, that would be the place to start ... I have seen GED correspondence courses in magazine ads (I don't recall where) ... I don't know if this is of any help, I hope so ... my prayers, as always, are with you sweetie ...

I am a writer/activist doing a story called Learning Under Lockdown for a national magazine. I would like to know more about some of your stories and the whether or not your loved ones have been able to complete college programs since the Pell Grants were taken away. I am looking for one success story and the story of another loved one unable to enroll in classes because it is not permitted. Please email me at fashakur@aol.com within the next 3-5 days if interested.
Be blessed...

There are courses for inmates all over the internet. Sorry, I deleted them after my son got going in school and before I heard of PTO. I will try to remember where I found some and get back with you. Some cost, some he can try for a grant, some give inmates discounts. There are plenty. Do you know what he is interested in learning? In the meantime, here are a couple of places to write.

You are wonderful! How and where did he apply for grants? That is one of the big obstacles of course, the money to pay for courses. I know in Florida there is Pensacola CC. They have a program that works with prison inmates. Also, I just got off the phone with my son and he said someone mentioned Drexel College. If you find the other info I would really appreciate getting it. In the meantime, I will work on getting the list. Thanks again!!

Jus' Mom,

Thanks for the information. I will request a list of courses and other programs they have to offer. First KC would have to work on getting his GED. After that, he will hopefully get a chance to further his education. This is good information. Again, thanks!!

I'm sorry I didn't get back with you sooner. I had these posted on the thread right before this one, didn't realize I posted anything here! I was just browsing around....Anyway, here's a few more. Good luck! I'm always coming across schools for inmates so if these don't do you any good let me know!
