Well, after a lengthy wait to talk to someone in the mailroom, here's the deal when sending books to GP inmates.

Book must be shipped in a bag and they will refuse all books that come in a box.
Why that is I have no fricken idea.

So after having a ton of books returned, we now got to the bottom of the mystery.

I e-mailed all the top book shippers to see if we can request special shipping needs (ie:bags) and will update.

That is absurd. I had a talk with someone in the mailroom at Solano and they told me that books will now be considered the inmate's special package for the quarter. That's great - we wouldn't want these guys to educate or better themselves, right? WTF? CDC seems to be getting worse all the time.

I have had no problem sending books from Amazon.com to North Kern -have never had to request special bags. How have you been sending them- through what company?

Amazon, sometimes they bag em, sometimes they box em. The R&R department is sending me an updated list after the state of emergency, they apperantly changed some things for the worse

E-mail from amazon cust service.
Further, please note that the packaging methods we use have been
proven to protect a variety of items effectively. Virtually every
Amazon.com order is shipped in a corrugated container. Air-filled
cushions are sometimes used to protect the items. Some shipments may
contain Flo-Pak polystyrene loose fill packing material, commonly
known as peanuts.

Okay

Amazon won't but Barnes and Noble Will.

If shipping books and the institution requires it be delivered in a bag or envelope as opposed to a box. Barnes and Noble states in their shipping details, you can request it go to a P.O. Box and be shipped in a bag or envelope.

Chino also states that only inmates that are PWC (Permanent Work Crew) can recieve books.

It will be a week of ordering books for me!

No R&R sheet yet.

Thanks for the update RPinSD!! Hey, what's PWC? I heard the name before but, don't know what it is. And why is it that only they can recieve books? I really want to send books to my guy.

PWC is Permanent Work Crew and at Chino would be any inmate that wears Blue Denim and Chambrey Shirts. Located on the MSF Yard (Minimum Support Yard) Central Reception PWC's, West Yard PWC's and Del Norte Unit Inmates on the East Yard.

Update to book order, I ordered 2 books From Barnes and Noble and after you order you have to e-mail customer service and advise them to pack in an envelope or bag and include your order #.

Some many hoops to jump through.

Hi elainewang

I tried to respond to your PM but it appears the system is having trouble.

Sycamore is a unit inside the Central Reception Area and currently is on a modified lockdown. You can get status to visit every Thursday by calling 909-597-1821, press 1 and 1 again. To make an appointment if required use ext. # 6448. It should return to normal soon if not this week.

To send money orders, make it payable to your son in law and include his CDC # his unit and bunk, P.O. Box, City, State. on the Money Order.
Mine I send up take from 2-3 wekks to post.

Example:
Bob Smith, CDC # D567890
Sycamore Unit 120 UP
P.O. Box 441
Chino, CA 91709

Does anyone know you can send books to someone in High Desert reception? Any suggestions on who to order through?

Hi RR69x2

Reception center inmates cannot recieve books, only letters for now. However one tricked I used was to get articles and good reading stuff from the internet and then copy it and paste it back onto a word doc. You can send that stuff in droves and mine always got through. Some institutions are picky if the url, emails ect was on the sheats so be sure to delete those.

I'll PM you the book store I found that will comply to any rule of any CA institution tosend books when you loved one is out of reception

I PM'd you all the details and here they are for anyone else.

www.codysbooks.com

In the final order screen there is a customer comment box. Put there any special shipping/packing instructions.

I just put 'must be shipped in paper padded envelope, use of any cardboard packing material will result in the refusal of item sent.

Send em books!
