To be honest i cant say that this is a good idea - grudges run long and deep and if those who still hold a grudge have a say to determine a persons freedom, there would be a lot of people doing more time than they should. But that of course is my opinion only.
Victims get more say on parole
07/02/2005 15:43 - (SA)
Cape Town - Draft legislation providing crime victims with more of a say when a perpetrator is considered for parole, was tabled at parliament on Monday.
The Judicial Matters Amendment Bill seeks mainly to encompass in a single measure a number of amendments to existing legislation.
According to an attached memorandum, when a perpetrator is considered by the authorities for parole, "a victim or relative who wants to be informed of the accused's possible release", will be contacted by the commissioner of correctional services.
This is provided they have told the commissioner they wish to be so informed.
Provision is also made in the bill to "provide for the identity or whereabouts of a complainant to be kept confidential".
