[What You Can Do]

Dear Spencer,

On April 8, America reached a shameful milestone when Ray Krone was released from prison, ten years after being sentenced to die for a crime he did not commit.

For the 100th time since the death penalty was reinstated in 1973, our criminal justice system released a person who had been wrongly sentenced to death. 100 innocent lives were put at risk, 100 victim families had to relive the horror of the crime, and at least 100 criminals who actually committed the crimes were allowed to go free.
[Ray Krone]

Ray Krone, who was convicted on the basis of suspect forensic and circumstantial evidence, was proved innocent by DNA testing. The same DNA evidence that freed Ray Krone pointed clearly to the real killer - a sex offender who struck again and was caught trying to molest a child while Ray Krone was imprisoned. In many states, however, inmates on Death Row do not have a legal right to DNA testing and can be executed even if DNA testing proves them innocent.

As you know, many others have been sentenced to death on weak evidence, or because of incompetent defense lawyers or prosecutorial misconduct. The Innocence Protection Act (IPA), now before Congress, includes common-sense safeguards that would go a long way to guarantee that innocent people like Ray Krone are not sentenced to die and will be able to prove their innocence if a mistake is made.

Your support of the Innocence Protection Act has already helped move this critical legislation forward: the IPA is co-sponsored by 25 Senators and half of the House of Representatives. Now is the time to make the Innocence Protection Act the law of the land. We must use this momentum to make sure that the Innocence Protection Act becomes law this year - before another innocent person is sentenced to die...and to help ensure that we are never faced with the ultimate nightmare - the execution of an innocent person.

I hope we can count on you to expand your support of the IPA's principles by making a contribution of $35 or more today at http://CJReform.org/ to support the work of The Justice Project. We'll use your tax-deductible donation to expand our nationwide campaign to pass the Innocence Protection Act and take the injustice out of our criminal justice system.

Now is the time to turn this shameful milestone into action. Please make the most generous contribution you can to The Justice Project by visiting http://CJReform.org/ipa2/ today and help us make sure that American justice doesn't have innocent blood on its hands.

Once again, thank you for your support of The Justice Project.
