Felon found dead in jail

Man apparently hanged self

LINDEN, Texas-The Texas Department of Public Safety's Texas Rangers are still investigating circumstances in the apparent suicide of a Cass County inmate on Sunday.

Jail officials discovered the body of Charles G. Daniel, 40, hanging from a homemade rope tied to a shower rod in his cell about 11:45 a.m. Sunday, Sheriff James "Troop" Estes said.

Jailers had last seen Daniel sitting on his bunk bed shortly after 11 a.m., during a routine floor walk, Estes said. The jailers made their way back by Daniel's cell about 11:45 a.m., when they noticed him hanging by a rope that he apparently made from a torn bed sheet.

Upon discovering Daniel, the jailers called an ambulance; paramedics attempted to revived the inmate, but it was too late.

Cass County Justice of the Peace Barbara McMillion pronounced Daniel dead at the scene.

Daniel, who had been housed in the Cass County jail since Nov. 23, had just been sentenced to 10 years in the Texas Department of Corrections on a felony escape charge.

He was awaiting transfer to the TDC at the time of the incident.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, Estes said.
