Does anyone have any info on Super-Max's in New York and prisons with a mental health program. I am looking for information on all, but would also like to see which ones are closest to New York City. Are there any that aren't way upstate?

As far as prisons go, Sing Sing and Greenhaven are out of the question. If there are any prisons with a mental health program, they have to be Maximums. Thanks.

I believe the criminaly insane are sent to one of the Psychiatric Centers.
Any one who is interested in helping us get the Bill pased to keep the mentaly ill inmates from being placed in SHU

I do not believe NY has a supermax. They have SHU units inside max's I believe. I am not 100% on this. There is a chance he may be moved out of the state to another state that has a supermax facility with a specific program for him (deemed "necessary" by the corrections dept). I do not believe he can go to a mental health facility unless he has a diagnosis by a psychiatrist.

I know some facilities have the SHUs (I thought they were called Supermaxs)that they ship inmates with long box times to. My friend is currently in Midstate doing 1 year box time (he's been there before for the same reason). Also I know southport has it because my hubby was there (during his last bid). Both are about 5 hours from the city. Midstate has box visiting from 5-9pm, (after the regular visits are over) once a week on weekends only. I don't know about Southport (that was before I met him).

A supermax is a prison designed for 24 hour lock down at all times (and worse). A SHU is a special housing unit (or a wing) within a regular maximum prison. They are two different things.
