does anyone know about interstate transfers, we are trying find out from the system if NSW has a reciprocation programme with Qld as we all know the system is very frustrating and every time you ask for info you get a different answer. What about sponsorship if you have a conviction recorded against you will the Department let you be a sponsor for day and week end release. Has anyone out there been prohibited from entering a correctional centre and if so how did you cope with it and did you ever have any joy in an appeal to the DCS?

Hi and welcome to PTO :)

I am not sure about interstate transfers, I will try and look into it for you.
I read your other post, and it seems they have stopped your visits? In Queensland, if you have a criminal record, or violate visits with contact, you automatically go on non contact visit. You can still visit the same times, etc, but it cant be contact. You can write to the general manager of the prison, and keep on requesting visitation. He may say no, but keep writing "in response" to whatever he says.
I am not sure about NSW, but in QLD, thats the way it works, that you go visit non contact.

Not sure about Queensland transfers but I do know that if you have been sentenced for more than 12 months you can apply to transfer to a WA prison if your family and friends are in that state. Call NSW Prisoner Aid about prohibited visits, they may be able to help you. I know that they can deliver personal messages inside to your loved ones too.

Thanks for your reply any information would be greatly appreciated. Are there any departments you can suggest that I may try to contact. Am I in the right section here to get the most information? If not can you please point me in the right direction.
Thanks

Thanks for your response, I have already tried that association and never found them to be of any help at all, the DCS appear to be a law unto themselves and I could not even get a Legal Eagle to help with an appeal to them.
Thanks

No, this is the right section :)
I will call the Corrections here on Monday for you, and ask them how it is done, if it is done, etc, so I can get you the correct information.

interstate prisoner transfers are permitted on two grounds only 1. legal which means there are outstanding charges in anothert State that the prisoner wants cleared up prior to the conclusion of his sentence. 2. Welfare grounds which means the prisoner's welfare eg his family etc are in another state and he needs to be accessibile to them. The interstate transfer is a Ministerial prerogative and requires both Correctional Ministers of each State to agree to the transfer or it does not go ahead. In Qld a prisoner can take out a Judicial Review against a Minister's decision not to allow the transfer and the Minister has to show reasons within 28 days. Check out the prisoners Legal Service in both Qld and NSW for more info. Also read the Interstate Transfer of Prisoners Act for the relevant States so you know what is in the legislation and how it applies to individual cases. cheers all

Hi spunky chops. In NSW check out Justice Action. They are a group who advocate on prison issues and have a lot of ex-prisoners aligned to it. They will be able to show you how to circumvent some of the bureaucratic bull------ that is endemic in the NSW prison system ever since old Captain Jimmy Cook first set foot in the land down under and colonised Australia as England's very own overseas prison! JA phone number and contacts are:9281 5100 PO. Box K365 Haymarket NSW 2000. JA also has a website just go to Google and type in justice action (Sydney australia) and it should come up. I will check out the correct address and get back online with it tomorrow night cheers all.

Thank you again for all the info on what to look for and the email address etc. Has been a great help as far as collecting info now it's a matter of putting it together and seeing what we can do with it. Probably not a lot but at least you can get some kind of insight into how things work which is better than being totally frustrated with ignorance.

Keep up the great articles
Cheers
