Political hot potatoes dominated legislators' attention last week

Administrators from the Department of Corrections have seemingly been everywhere - mental health panels, substance abuse presentations and, of course, updates on the current situation with Idaho prisons.
Tom Beauclair, director of the state system, called county jails a short-term solution to the overcrowding situation.
"Most of last year we were at the maximum," he said. "Right now, we're down a little bit, but that can change overnight."
Beauclair said it's possible Idaho could ship some of its inmates to out-of-state facilities, which hasn't been done for several years.
If that avenue is chosen, he said male inmates would be more likely to be moved than females, because, among other things, they are less expensive per capita to the state.
