The head of the state's prison system is recommending the addition of 100 beds at the prison in Ellsworth. Corrections Secretary Roger Werholtz calls the $3 million project the best way for now to meet the state's need for prison space.

Werholtz went before a House committee Wednesday to outline a range of possibilities for housing more inmates. One option would create housing for 500 more inmates in Stockton and Yates Center at a cost of $48 million.

But Werholtz told lawmakers the Ellsworth project would buy the state some time while a special commission reviews the state's sentencing laws. Kansas can house about 9,200 inmates in its prisons and came just six short of capacity at one point last year. About 8,900 inmates are currently in state custody.
