Middelburg - The head of Mpumalanga's serious and violent crimes unit, superintendent Botsotso Moukangwe, will spend the week behind bars after being denied bail on Monday.

Moukangwe was remanded by Middelburg magistrate's court when he appeared briefly on charges of defeating the ends of justice, fraud, theft, possession of suspected of stolen goods and helping a suspect escape from custody. He has not been asked to plead and was remanded until next Monday for further investigation, and a possible bail application.

Superintendent Izak van Zyl confirmed on Tuesday that provincial police commissioner Eric Nkabinde was expected to suspend Moukangwe from work.

Moukangwe was arrested last Thursday after Nkabinde instituted an investigation nine months ago, following a number of complaints against him.

The allegations include that Moukangwe and his unit used apartheid-era torture tactics at Middelburg and Witbank police stations, and ran an extortion racket in which the families of detainees were charged ransoms for the release of their loved ones.
Van Zyl said police also were investigating the source of R350 000 cash found in a safe in Moukangwe's office in Middelburg at the time of his arrest.
