A manhunt has been launched for three awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the kwaNongoma Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal today, the correctional services department said.
Manelisi Wolela, the correctional services spokesperson, said the three, who were considered dangerous, held three warders hostage before escaping with five firearms and ammunition. The men demanded the keys to the warders' cars but fled on foot when they failed to start any of the vehicles. Two warders were slightly injured during the escape.
An internal investigation has been launched, Wolela said. He said although the department had over the years reduced the numbers of inmate escapes, the current trend was unacceptable. Wolela appealed to the public to alert the police should they come into contact with the three escapees. The men were wanted for crimes including rape and armed robbery. - Sapa
