I am kind of a 'natural health' guru and can't get enough of this stuff. I read about natural methods constantly and have an arsenal of information that I will begin to share here over the next while...

First let me say... If you have any of the family of the Hep viruses, do check with your doctor before blindly going into additional and 'freak' natural treatments. Do not think that if a little is good then a lot is better! Check the source of your natural treatment recommendation. Make sure that the source is turstworthy and respected.

The article below talks about Liver Health. Hep C is a disease of the Liver. Your liver conducts about 1500 processes of which medical science understands only a few. (This was told to me by my Father's doctor when treating my Father for Hep C)

What we do know is that our Livers clean our systems and blood of toxins. Many toxins that we come in contact with everyday. Even the healthiest of us have overburdened livers if we are constantly exposed to environmental toxins and all of us can benefit from a cleanse of the liver... Smoking and alcohol are a strain on the liver too! Keep your liver healthy - it is necessary for our overall health and well being.

I will post a separate thread on the spring liver cleanse. Our bodies follow the seasons and our livers are most responsive to a cleanse in the spring when life is in a renewal stage... March/April/May are liver cleanse months...

Anyway, here is the article...

Powerful Support for Liver Health
Michael T. Murray, ND

What Is The Best Way To Support The Liver?

Don’t put undue stress on the liver. Avoid smoking and harmful chemicals, especially cleaning solvents and pesticides. The most important dietary guidelines for supporting good liver function also support good general health: avoid saturated fats, refined sugar, caffeine and alcohol, drink at least six glasses of water each day, and consume plenty of vegetables and legumes for their high fibre and nutrient content.

Certain foods contain nutrients your body needs to detoxify. These include garlic, onions, eggs and other high-sulphur foods, cabbage-family vegetables (especially broccoli, brussels sprouts and cabbage), green foods (wheat grass juice, chlorella and spirulina), and herbs and spices (dandelion, turmeric and licorice).

What Supplements Promote Liver Health?

If you are healthy and follow the dietary recommendations above, then a high-potency multiple vitamin and mineral supplement may be all you need. However, if you are suffering from impaired liver function, especially chronic hepatitis, then several unique compounds can give you additional support. Since the following work synergistically, combining their use will produce even better results.
Glucuronate is used by the liver to bind to toxins such as hormones, food additives and cigarette smoke, and helps eliminate them from the body. Taken as a supplement, glucuronate reduces the stress on the liver and enhances the liver’s ability to detoxify. Clinical studies have shown glucuronate supplementation can improve liver function even for liver impairment due to alcohol abuse, acute and chronic hepatitis, exposure to toxic substances and diabetes.
Alpha-lipoic acid is a sulphur-containing substance necessary for the production of cellular energy. An effective antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid protects the liver from free radical damage and also helps promote detoxification. Preliminary clinical evidence has shown benefits to people with hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver.

Silybin phytosome is a special extract of milk thistle bound to phosphatidylcholine. A growing body of research indicates that silybin phytosome is better absorbed and produces better results than regular milk thistle extract. One of the most potent liver-protecting substances known, silybin phytosome acts as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger and stimulates formation of new liver cells.

Schizandra berry extract has been a classic component in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Some of the effects noted in scientific studies include antioxidant effects, anti-stress action and liver protection against chemical damage.

Can These Natural Products Be Used For Hepatitis?

Absolutely. They are especially helpful for people suffering from chronic hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) and the most serious form, chronic hepatitis C (CHC). An estimated five million people in the United States and Canada are infected with the CHC virus, and as many as 200 million worldwide (roughly five per cent of the world’s population).

The drug of choice in conventional medicine for chronic hepatitis is alpha-interferon, a very expensive treatment that benefits only about one-third of cases. Fortunately, natural compounds such as glucuronate, alpha-lipoic acid and silybin phytosome exert benefits of their own and may also improve the effectiveness of alpha-interferon.

Thank you, Teb!

When I DID THE RESEARCH, then put my husband on a whole regimen of natural remedies for his Hep, people could NOT beleive the profound visible change it made for him. I can show you the most astounding photos, of how, in 8 months on a totally natural regime, he suddenly looked 20 years YOUNGER!

MILK THISTLE is NUMBER ONE! It disolves fibrosis scarring and builds up each cell's outer membrane. And it has no side effects or contra-indications of any kind. Milk thistle has been around as a liver remedy for thousands of years. Yet, it is such a simple, unassuming plant. In fact it was used for hundreds of years, as a salad ingredient, much as we use lettuce today!

I MUST SAY though that YOUR DOCTOR should be consulted before going the natural remedy route.

Be prepared for naysaying, because doctor's are prone to trust the big pharmaceutical companies first!

But you MUST tell your doctor what you are taking, because in some cases, there are herbal remedies that you should not take.

Case in point: LICORICE ROOT is also a powerful liver fortifier! Most Hep C patients should be taking it. BUT, if you have high-blood pressure, licorice root will send it skyrocketing. Thus, it is perhaps NOT recommended FOR YOU.

TEB, there are a whole slew of herbal remedies that ANYONE with Hep C should not take. We have to get that list posted up here somewhere. Also, we need to post about the terrible danger TYLENOL poses for Hep C patients!

All My Love,
Menolly

Menolly,

I agree with you whole heartedly! Ask your Doctor, but do beware that Doctors are not all on the bandwagon with natural remedies. There are a rising number of medical Doctors that are now joining forces with the natural health community and are at least working in tandem with natural health practices.

YES! It is most important for ANYONE - not just people with Hep C - to investigate natural remedies before blindly taking them. For instance Echinacea is not appropriate for anyone that has an autoimmune system disorder such as Rheumatoid Arthritus, Lupus, HIV or any other autoimmune disorder. Not many people know this. And of course as you mentioned Licorice Root is not recommended for high blood pressure. There are many other natural remedies and cautions but sometimes people just believe that it is natural and will work for everything!

Research and find a trusted source! Get a Naturopath if your health care insurance allows, or if you can afford. Pharmacists are more and more educated with the contra indications of natural remedies and conventional medical drugs so that could be your first stop for information - the local drug store and the Pharmacist!

Oh, and Menolly...

Tylenol and NSAID's in general are mentioned in the last article that I posted - "A Silent Menace"

Menolly - Check out the article that I posted about Siliphos.

Silybum marianum is an extract of Milk Thistle and there is a lot of study going on right now...

Not that Milk Thistle is not an amazing remedy but we should be researching this extract further...

Also, we need to post info about the danger of IRON for Hep C patients. IRON is what the virus uses to replicate. It is like their sugar and oxygen!!

Any Hep C positive person needs to check their vitamin bottle. If it has iron in it, into the garbage can it goes!
