View Full Version : Polunsky Unit: Has it changed?
AngiStone 01-12-2005, 06:19 AM Hey everyone! Im new, Im a rookie, haha :). Anyway, Im 21, student from The Netherlands (you know, that little country in Europe famous for its red light district area, drugs policy and tulips! :p ) Ive been writing to a DR inmate for quite some time now. He's on Polunsky, TX. Ive done some research about this unit, and found out that there are horrible stories going around about the living facilities, food, behaviour of guards, etc. But these stories are all from 2000,2002 etc, none seem te be recent. My guy does not complain to me,he doesnt tell me whats going on, coz he feels he shouldnt complain. I told him, thats what Im here for, you can tell me anything babe! But he just doesnt want to bother me with it I think. My question: how are the conditions nowadays? a bit better? I know Kyla writes to someone on Polunsky aswell, maybe you could tell me some? that'd be great! How often do you all write to your guys? And do you send them money,or books etc?
Great site, hope someone will reply! thankz!

abelle 01-12-2005, 08:09 AM Hi angistone!
I am from the Netherlands as well, and I write with someone on Polunsky as well (not "loving", but friends!). But since it was not been so long, I have not discussed the circumstances with him.
Welcome to PTO, and I hope you can learn a lot here and get to know some really nice people here...

softheart 01-12-2005, 12:02 PM Polunsky is bad, I have someone there, there are many stories posted here at PTO about the conditions on the unit. I had hopes when the new warden took over things would get better, but they didn't at all.
If you read through News from Death Row here you will find several articles that have been written by inmates on Polunsky.

Hi Angistone
Welcome to PTO :D
I do have someone I am close to on Polunsky, I get to read his good days and bad days. As everyone else agrees, its not that great, and there are several articles that you can read through. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask anytime. :) It really hasnt changed from the articles that you have read, and the treatment on these men depends to on the level they are on, level one they get priviledges of there radio, visits, commisary, then it goes to level two to three, which level three is the worst.
Also, yes you can send books, I send through Barnes and Noble or Amazon, and send office supplies from office max (Places like that). As for sending money, you need to ask the inmate to send you a trust fund slip, then you fill it out, and can send a money order in US dollars. Hope this helps some!!
Legalkitty 01-13-2005, 12:44 PM Hi AngiStone, I have two penpals on DR at Polunsky as they have really not complained that much about the conditions. Of course, that doesn't mean that incessant lock-down and lack of human contact doesn't make life miserable.
Visting as you know is non-contact but out of state visitors are entitled to special visits (2 four hour visits per month for those on level one). I was at Polunsky in October and will be heading back to Texas in 3 months.

CelliePieGrrl 01-13-2005, 02:56 PM I am also 21 and my husband is on d/r as well. I write to my husband every day as he writes to me every day too. Yes I send him books and stationary for holidays, or just to let him know I love him, etc. What in particular were you wanting to know about the conditions of the unit?
Retired-26 01-13-2005, 03:00 PM welcome to pto! i ahve a friend on the polunsky unit but in general population. wondering?? does anyone know what g/p is like there? same as d/r?
softheart 01-13-2005, 03:06 PM ash I have a guy in GP there, he doesn't complain to much. Generally the same as other GP food sucks, and general things like that. DR is treated totally different then GP. It is a world in itself and the staff treat the DR inmates like the scum of the earth.
If you would like I can ask him, he is just a friend and I know will be honest with what GP there is like.

softheart 01-13-2005, 03:26 PM Your welcome hun, I will get a letter off to him today and ask him for all the details.

AngiStone 01-14-2005, 02:40 AM hey, thankz for all your reply's! Ive been doing some reading the past few days, about bad food,no sleep, and all the different levels in polunsky. my guy buys his own food, and has a radio, does this mean he's on level 1? are there big deiffences in the way you're treated on the different levels? im sorry for asking stupid questions, but I just dont know hardly anything about the unit itself, and wanted to find more info on it!
good day to you all!
Hi Angi
Level one they can have radios, books, special visitation, and recreation, then level two, I think things get taken away (I am not familiar with level 2), until level three, where all privelidges are taken away from them.
They can have five minute phone calls every 90 days as well, as long as the person that they are calling is on there visitation list. They need to put in a request to do this.
I hear the food is awful as well, especially since the 15% budget cut, that the food has been disgusting, and most of the men are buying there food from comissary to eat.
