Pretoria - A father of two, who is believed to have killed his two sons, his wife and himself, is thought to have committed the crime just days after being freed on R500 bail after allegedly assaulting his wife.
The bodies of Louis Paul Swanepoel, 40, his wife, Janine, and their two sons, Stephan, 14, and Morné, 16, were found in the master bedroom of their Magalieskruin house on Monday.
Police were called after the family's domestic worker made the gruesome discovery.
Louis Swanepoel was arrested last week on a charge of assault with intent to grievous bodily harm.
This was after he apparently dragged his wife around by a rope tied around her neck.
Swanepoel said in a statement during his court appearance on Friday that he had been acting in self-defence.
According to him it had been a "game" that went horribly wrong and that he had not intended to hurt anyone.
Agreed to stay away from family
One of his bail conditions was that he could not see his wife of 17 years.
He agreed to stay with family in Florida on the West Rand for the duration of the court case.
But the bodies of the couple and their two teenagers were found only three days later.
According to police, there was reason to believe that Swanepoel's wife and sons were shot first. However, the circumstances surrounding Swanepoel's death were still vague.
According to court documents, Swanepoel had asked for access to his sons.
He had said he was worried about Stephan, whom he said was paralysed. He suggested he saw his sons at a neutral venue.
In the same statement, Swanepoel said a charge of "prostitution" was pending against him.
Beeld learnt from a reliable source that this related to a case involving the rape of a prostitute.
Weapon was reported as stolen
Swanepoel was out on R2 000 bail in connection with that case.
Initial investigation into the killings suggests the firearm used in the family murder was stolen from Menlyn shopping centre on Sunday afternoon.
Inspector Percy Morokane said a man from KwaZulu-Natal reported to Brooklyn police that the weapon had been stolen.
"The initial investigation indicates that no firearms are registered in Swanepoel's name."
But, a pistol was found at the murder scene.
